Hitachi EX 120-3 blowing oil, fuel or both out of exhaust

So the electric pump label reads 10 psi. We cleaned the residue off and have run the machine for a few hours the last few days…no residue has returned. The muffler is new within the past year and I noticed the stack doesn’t have much of a curve to it. Given all the rain we have had we suspect...

Hitachi EX 120-3 blowing oil, fuel or both out of exhaust

Thanks. I tried your suggestion with the paper towel but didn’t see a material difference so I am not 100% sure diesel is in there. Another thing I forgot to mention is that I built a fuel polisher and removed as much of the fuel as I could then drained the tank. There was a lot of crud on the...

Hitachi EX 120-3 blowing oil, fuel or both out of exhaust

I just serviced the fuel system on a recently acquired Hitachi Ex 120-3 and in doing so changed the fuel filter, cleaned the screen and emptied the fuel separator. The prior owner had an inline electric pump that I activated to prime the system. Days later the fuel separator was found leaking so...

    Hitachi ex120-3

I have the same machine and had the same problem. I chased it for a while with some of the same solutions you did then I cleaned the oil cooler, condenser and radiator. In my case there was so much build up of crap in the oil cooler and condenser that it wasn’t allowing the radiator to cool.

    Hitachi EX 120-3 joy stick

Anybody know where the wire that goes up into the joystick disconnects. I am trying to disassemble the joy stick to replace the seals but can’t find a disconnect for the wire. Do I need to pull the top handle off to see the disconnect?

Fluid low? Filters clogged? Air in pump?

    Ex120-3 bogging only when warm

Maybe...air in the pump? Open the bleeder valve and purge any air.

    Changed coolant and thermostat…now overheating.

Update: Ianjoub made a point about ensuring the radiator was clean. While we took a water hose and air gun to it, I was not confident that the back side of the radiator facing the oil cooler was completely clean. Today we pulled out the radiator….nearly half the radiator facing the cooler was...

    Changed coolant and thermostat…now overheating.

Allan, thank you for the post. I removed the belt this morning from my machine and have no movement in the crankcase pulley. my fingers were crossed hoping the was it. While pursuing Allan’s suggestion I rotated the water pump pulley and there is a faint whining sound when rotated. This whining...

    Changed coolant and thermostat…now overheating.

Delmer, thanks for the reply. Gauge does not appear to be operational as it shows no movement. A warning light and buzzer are the only indications of overheating. No bubbling, no steaming. The hoses top and bottom get extremely hot, to the touch. I will have to get a way of measuring the temp...

    Changed coolant and thermostat…now overheating.

Update…installed old thermostat that was working after testing in boiled water, put 2 bottles of VP Racing cool down in radiator, cleaned radiator, ran heater for a bit while idle. Expansion tank not losing fluid. Still overheating. Could the cap cause issues?

    Changed coolant and thermostat…now overheating.

New machine (Hitachi ex120-3) and today I changed the coolant and thermostat….now it is overheating after about 20 minutes of operation. maybe it was doing this before but since it is new to me I am not certain. Any ideas on what to check. Half tempted to put the old thermostat back in…I, tested...
