    Quality Hex Bit Sockets

Who makes great hex bit sockets? Sheared my proto 17mm 3/4 dr off torquing sprocket segment cap bolts. It held up fine to an 3/4 impact taking the bolts out. Put a Snap On but in its place and it twisted 90 deg but didn’t break, didn’t torque anything either. Was looking at Wright but their...

    Rad or torque guns

Looking at buying myself one second hand. Are there any brands to watch out for or better than another? Probably going pneumatic than electric so I know I need a regulator, any reason for the fancy regulator units in cage other than the drier?

    Work Pants

Dickies has discontinued my winter work pants. They were a polyester blend with a polyester flannel lining. Anyone know of something similar? I avoid cotton as it just wicks water up my pant leg when working under a machine.

No one wants to work also They don’t want to pay

Operator was complaining that no one wants to work anymore and that’s why they can’t get anybody to run machines. Followed up by telling me he’s been at a multi million maybe billion dollar company for 15 years and makes $25/hr as a supervisor. Next experienced operator made $23. Scrap place I...

    Homemade Tools

Looking through the forum I have seen several great homemade tools/kits for getting the job done on a budget; John C's hydraulic kit and angle iron mount, another posters I beam cylinder bench, any more out there? There was one poster who showed an image of their coffee can jumper wires with...

    Hydraulic Test Line Fittings

A lot of times I need every 1/8 of room so I'm trying to avoid a reducer is why I'm looking. No luck finding what I need. Gauges are 1/4 NPT male as usual, but the test hose is nice and light weight but has 1/8 NPT ends. I can't find a no-leak quick coupler that fits 1/8 and 1/4 interchangeably...

    Working in the Heat

Having worked in the Southwest for awhile and occasional summer Houston job also I thought I could acclimate decently to the humidity of Kansas summer, not so much. Last job was down in a gravel pit in full sun standing in water. Truck dash said it was 108 F at 4 PM and probably very high...

    Just Got My CDL

First off should have done it years ago before the change so that's on me, but finally got through the mandatory class last week and took the test today. Now I get a big boy truck haha. I'm not sure how someone who isn't sponsored by a company or another very understanding support system is...

    Torque Multiplier Reaction Arm

Using a 16:1 torque multiplier, Proto 6232. Issue is there's nothing near the bolts to brace it against. Coworker says shove a pry bar or pipe in the factory supplied one. I'm thinking there's probably a longer one available but I'm not finding anything on Proto. What do you guys do?

    Genie 45/25

Ok this thing is kicking my butt. Customer says it ran fine then it wouldn't, they "tested" battery and starter but it cranks slow was the complaint. Show up battery is very low, hook up charger, cranks ok but won't start. Fuel pump for gasoline isn't pumping so I switched to LP. Confirm the LP...

Not sure why we're having so many problems with DEF

Maintenance manager is frustrated with all the issues their having. Wanted to know if the last repair is warranty as we were just out there for the same machine and the same issue, umm no? I get many places also don't care about their fuel but really? I see it everywhere, bulk containers sitting...

    OrganizingMechanic Tools in Small Truck

Running around in a F150 doing drivability issues: broken wires, busted hoses, emissions, etc. So I don't need big tools but I'm having a hard time organizing my tools. Tried pack out boxes but the locking feature means they all stick together and I have to unstack it to grab the bottom ones...

Insuring Semi Tractor for Personal Use

I'm looking to buy a semi for moving all our junk from Denver to Kansas city but the catch is I need a place to store it once it gets here. So enclosed trailer it is. For about $10k I've been seeing semi's with dry van trailers that the owner swears up and down is road worthy, nothing new but...

    Finding an Honest Employer

Not trying to whine or complain too much but what the f***! Current place is an absolute dumpster fire, all the mechanics but me and the newest have left. One didn't like his manager so no called no showed, the other guy who was in no way ready was talked into being a field guy to cover for him...

    Hydraulic Testing Equipment Storage

Slowly building up the my hydraulic testing set but I'm trying to figure out what to store it all in. Obviously everything is covered in hydraulic oil, usually leaks a little bit, gauges are bit delicate so can't just shove them in a loose box (or can I?), leads are long and bulky, and of course...

    Thinking about Moving to Maine

(If the wrong area please move) I'm done with Colorado summers and it's people, been here for 6 years now. I grew up in north Idaho, western Montana and eastern Washington area and miss the trees, water, winter, and countryside. But the wife is from California and can't handle the constant cloud...

    Inexperienced and Young Tech Egos

So the shop just rid itself of the toxic mechanic, but now it's left with all the poisoning he did to the new ones, new as in one just came from jiffy lube and the other came from a GM dealer a little over a year ago. The GM guy is can work through most issues but doesn't know things like...
