Peter Mortensen Collection BCFP Renfrew Div. A mobile "A Frame" built by Hayes Manufacturing in Vancouver B.C. used to "Dumo" Off Highway Logging Trucks at the new Dryland Sort at Renfrew Div. from about 1963 to 1966 .
Was there a specific reason BCFP used this rather than a LeTourneau or some other log stacker? I know LeTourneaus were around and used with off highway trucks at the time.

The BCFP Renfrew Div. Dryland Sort was one of the first on the Coast of B.C. To say there was a lot of trial and error would be an under statement . Some time in late 1965 or early 1966 the Mobile "A Frame " was parked and a Kenworth Log Stacker was used to unload the logging trucks , by splitting the load into two or three "Bites" .
It's interesting that I have found pictures of attempts to trip the stakes and use a Cat to push the loads off the logging trucks at Muir Creek DLS a BCFP contract operation in its beginnings around 1963 . Fast forward to the mid 1990's the logs that had been hauled to the Port Renfrew DLS are being hauled to the Honeymoon Bay DLS on Lake Cowichan . Other Logging Operations on the Coast have perfected a system of tripping stakes and pushing loads off logging trucks with 988 Cat log stackers . For the last few years of operation the Off Highway logging trucks were pushed off .

That is a fascinating photo of the cat pushing the load off. Thanks for the clarification and additional information.

I unloaded a few road trucks that way with a pitifully small crawler loader. Part of the strategy was pushing the trailer away from the tripped load and it would barely do that.

That is a picture taken at Muir Creek , it is Butler Bros. first logging truck . Butler Bros. logged for B.C. Forest Products at Muir Creek for a couple of years in the early 1960's before Malloch & Moseley took over the operation. The Dryland Sort at Muir Creek began operations soon after the Renfrew Div. Dryland Sort was opened up .
Butler Bros. were also logging for Pacific Logging in the Sooke area before working for BCFP at Muir Cr. . When Pacific Logging increased their quota , Butler Bros. concentrated on that part of their operation .
The idea of a "Push off" system for dumping logging trucks was tried very early in the transition of dumping logs in the water to dumping logs on dryland . I seen a primitive system for pushing off loads at a contractors camp out of Gold River in 1989 . But it was the mid 1990's before I seen what was a fine tuned system .
