Hi everyone! Im new to the forum, but i have frequented it a bit over the years. So heres my deal.
Ive got a cat 416c (4zn1-up) i got in a non running condition from my in-laws a few weeks ago. It sat for 10 years, but i did start it up 6 years ago but immediately shut it off as the stabalizers were pouring hydraulic fluid
I repacked the seals that needed it and changed all the filters and fluids etc.
Im now having a weird problem with the transmission. It will go into gear and drive if i try right after i start it, but then the transmission starts making a noise ( like a zipper) and then i lose forward and reverse.
If i shut it off, and back on, i get them back.
Its like im losing prime or pressure.
The sound reminds me of a pump cavitating.
I also have a small leak where the hydraulic pump meets the trans, comming out at the weephole in the picture ( weephole is on the pump right at the back of the transmission). Do you think this could cause enough air to be sucked in to cavitate the trans?
Heres the scoop on the trans.
It had about 2 gallons of water for who knows how long( because the boot for the shifter to trans housing was non existent) so years of rain found its home.
I flushed the system completely using about 20 gallons of to-4 . Filled it and ran with the pump side hose off at the cooler( pumped out 1 gallon, added 1 new gallon) until the fluid was clear.
I replaced the main filter at the beginning of the flush but havent replaced the filter yet after the flush ( but im going to tomorrow), anyone have any input?
I also pre wrote this, so after i wrote this, I pulled the screen and it was completely clogged ( again) this was the second time i pulled the screen ( first time was when i got it and found the water)so i really dont know yet if its current material degrading, or if its old material that was in the system.
But i did drive it to put it on my slab, it will drive if i gas it, but completely loses drive if i idle it. Sorry for the long post but i didnt want to leave anything out.
