Glad to share it. Part of me hates to keep bumping this thread back to the top. So it's nice to know some people are still enjoying it.

I'd say so.;)

Yep CM, you would need to hire his entire family along with all of those ag tractors that they use!

:falldownlaugh...and more like he couldn't afford to fix all the oopsies I'd make! Yup, we're having fun! Got our marathon bush-hogging weekend coming up. Got the tractor ready, hope I don't have any surprises. :dizzy

One thing I didn't mention in my last update was that when we had the loader out and cleaned on it, dad hit the starter and nothing happened except a big puff of white smoke coming out from under the seat. Closer look revealed the battery post had partly melted. Very scary.

Come to find out, the clamp had broken.

Dad went over later in the week and replaced it. He whittled on the post and got a nice snug fit for the new clamp.

We've been procastinating installing an extinguisher on the machine. Have had one, just never fitted it. That little incident lit a fire under under us...pun intended.

Fall Cutting

Met brother and dad at the farm at 0700 with Hardees breakfast in tow. While our mouths were full of biscuits and our coffee spread out on the gooseneck, we saw a lowboy and dozer heading in to the propery across the street. Looked like someone we knew that uses Dresser equipment and we thought it might be a TD-12 or TD-15E. No one lives on the property and our curiosity was raised. Thought we'd ride over in the Ranger at lunch and see what was going on.

Got all the hogs fired up. Last cutting of the year. It wasn't as thick and so we were able to cut it in record time. Below are couple of rare shots of the three of us all lined up on one field.

After lunch on the porch we headed over across the street to watch some dozer clearing. Who knows we might learn some tricks.

Turned out not to be the guy we thought it was, nor a Dresser dozer. Was a local logging outfit. After a few pushes the guy came out and stopped to chat. He said they were about to log it and he was cutting some roads, but he was also going to do some clearing. He was digging in an old dry pond and clearing some thick bushes. We didn't tarry long. I snapped a couple of shots as he got back to work. It was a JD 650G.

Back to work...

Started my first pass on a field and saw a piece of black wire in a ditch that one of the other cutters had just been through.

Looked a little closer and said, that ain't no piece of wire. Think it was a racer.

That looks like a black racer. We were burning some old brush a few weeks ago and found 2 rat snakes. They weren't scared of us nor tried to get away. Since I hate rats and they eat rats, they were both left alone.

Great pics as usual...

That critter doesn't look like a racer I know but I'm no snake expert. The racers here are a brighter blue.

Hmm maybe a racer after all... http://www.agfc.com/resources/publications/ar_snakes.pdf Just never seen one that dark but looking around there's some variation.

Me either Scott. I'm no snake expert. We only have about four kinds of snakes on this place that I've seen that I'd be comfortable identifying: black racer, copper head, chicken snake and cotton mouth in the springs. I've seen the racers before while cutting. They usually have their head up about 8 inches and won't let you get close. Pretty amazing the way they slither off. It definitely met the description in your link with the solid black and white chin and neck.

Yes, I hate rats and mice. Would rather have a few snakes around. The rats are a huge nuisance to the equipment, especially in the barn. I just don't like to be surprised by the snakes.

Good link AllDodge. That's probably very similar to the ones here.

Spring cleaning

Since we had some time to spare on Saturday, we took the loader and tried to clean out an old spring that comes out of rock face on the side of rocky hill. We're 3 to 4 inches behind on rain, but the springs are still wet.

I first knocked a few limbs off an old hackberry tree.

Clearing a spot to dump the rocks I was about to pull out of the spring.

First bite got a few big rock...and a tree.

This is what we're driving into. It's really grown up, so I apologize for the pictures. The purpose was mainly to get the caved in dirt and rocks out that were stopping up the cave. It's a soupy mess out from the spring. Weren't sure if we'd bury the loader so we pulled the tractor in and there seem to be a bottom to it.

Shot from up on the hill above the spring looking down on the approach.

Decades ago my grand-dad had build a block retaining wall to keep the sides from falling in and blocking the water source for the cattle. It's really a cave that goes back under the hill. Unfortunately, the block walls fell in on each other years ago.

There is just enough room for the loader. I literally couldn't even back the 8' box blade in here without hitting rock ledge on both sides. Kinda feels a little claustrophobic. My brother had some snips and was taking out some face-smacking limbs.

I could only curl up so much. The hill had ledges that would only allow me to get so much.

Backing out with a load.

Drive in, get a load and dump it to the left. This was pretty much the after shot. Not much to see.

DSC06265-640.jpg

Really needed to pull out more muck here. Spring is to the right.

IMG_20151025_144837608-640.jpg

Flows around this little turn.

IMG_20151025_144845335-640.jpg

This was the best after shot I have. The water was coming out of the wall of the hill and finding its way through the dirt and rocks of what we'd pushed into. I think a good rain and it will flush most of that out.

Anyway, something different. Having fun...
