Good morning to you all,
I have a question regarding 2 skid steers that a buddy of mine has.He has a 259D3 with the right side drive motor not working and a 289D that has no engine and is basically being used for parts. That being said he asked me if the final drive motors are compatible with one another,i assume they are not based on the fact that the 289 is smaller than 259 but i couldnt find a clear cut answer. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I would have thought not but need the Serial Numbers of both machines to make an exact determination.

Interesting that you created this in the backhoe loader section. I only came across it by accident. I’ll ask a mod to move it to where it belongs.

Sorry about that, must of mis clicked. The serial number for the 289 is TAW0539 and the 259 is CW906514.Thanks for the quick reply and moving the thread!

Well the answer is now definitively no.
The motors on the 295D are a size smaller performance/flow-wise than the ones on the 289. It may be physically possible to install the larger motor on the 259D but the tracks are going to rotate at different speeds.

do you think it would work if we swapped both final drives?
It might, but.......

a) they might not physically fit
b) the motors on the 289 are "old tech" so likely not as reliable
and c) I'm not sure that the hydrostatic pumps on the 259D will supply the flow required by the larger motors.

if you want to have a bash don't let fear stop you.

With this being said larger motors will slow the machine but will increase the torque giving more traction power which in turn will wear the tracks quicker.
It's all pluses and minuses. what can be tolerated, what can't.
